Our neighbors are Hindu and it has been very eye opening to experience
some of their traditions. They just completed their Diwali Festival,
which is the Hindu festival of lights and is symbolic of the triumph of
light over darkness or good over evil. In the hallway outside our flat
they made designs called rangoli from colored sand-like granules. At
night they lit the lamps and turned off the lights in symbolism of the
light overcoming the dark. As part of their celebrations, lots of Hindu
families light off fireworks. Our neighbors invited Ameilya and Madi
over for sparklers on one of the nights of the festival. It has been so
fun to get to know this family and I'm grateful for the different
cultural experiences that we are having here in Bahrain that we would
not get to experience in the United States. I love seeing how other
people live and the different traditions that go along with the various
religions that are common to this area.
